LASIK Surgery Isn’t Simply for the Reckless Hearted
If you take the time to read any of the message boards or chat rooms on the Internet about Lasik surgery, you will wonder how anyone could get the courage to schedule a Lasik procedure, and why on earth they would want it. The many different clinics for LASIK surgery are made to sound completely impersonal and quite similar to a lab built by Dr. Frankenstein, and the procedure itself sounds a little unreal. It seems like the only people that would get Lasik are those with such bad vision that they cannot get out of bed without their glasses on.
Well, let me give you my story of how I chose Lasik. My vision isn’t great, but it’s not incredibly terrible either. I can actually go to movies and see well enough to enjoy the film without glasses, but I need glasses to drive in order to read the street signs far enough away to act on the information. LASIK for me was not a necessity, but I just figured that it would make my life a lot easier. I am outdoors very frequently, backpacking, climbing hills, and mountain biking. I’ve never been able to make a pair of glasses last very long, and I am frequently and a lot of dirty areas, so contact lenses never work very well either. For these reasons, the sound of LASIK eye surgery was highly appealing.
After reading the paragraph above you might think that I’m kind of athletic, and it’s true that I am, so you might be thinking why it would be afraid of such a thing as a little scalpel? LASIK really doesn’t use a scalpel, but instead it uses something called a microkeratome blade, but it is still an incredibly sharp object that is cutting my eye during the LASIK procedure. Nowadays Lasik physicians can get a laser to cut the flap in the eye, which is more than a little better than a sharp blade. But anyway, I had too many spills in my life to think any sharp object nearing my eye was a good idea, even under the skilled hands of a Lasik physician.
After spending the time and going to talking to three different LASIK surgeons, every one of them told me that because of my age at 28 and my relatively good health, and with my mild to moderate nearsightedness that I was a near perfect candidate for LASIK eye surgery. After discussing this procedure with the surgeons, I scheduled my operation with the surgeon that had by far the best record, and who spent the most time going over the process with me.
I was really happy with the fact that the surgery wasn’t painful at all, even though I took everything that they offered to provide comfort, even the sedative and a teddy bear. The only strange thing I remember about the Lasik procedure itself was a smell, something vaguely like hair burning. I’m pretty sure that it was my eye. I am kind of glad they didn’t tell me to expect that before the Lasik procedure, I am not sure I would have gone in.
After a few years, I guess I was a nearly perfect Lasik client, as my eyes now have 20/20 vision and have remained stable long after the Lasik operation. Despite any naysayers out there, if you have been deemed a good candidate for a LASIK vision correction procedure, grab a hold of that teddy bear and get it done.
